design for justice

is doing graphic design futile?

ill share my thoughts later, when i have more time. but think about it. in terms of helping the needy. i feel that every other major in college can use their knowledge for more than i can. science majors can help construct canals or better cohabitation with the world they live around. architectural designers can create sustainable living environments. businessmen can help management of small businesses.

i can make a poster.
i can teach kids color theory. which is futile as well.

Graphic design is not futile, it makes people happy.

When people are captured by a piece of design, they are happy. They get to look at something beautiful. I like it when I get to look at beautiful things.

Colour theory is important. Do you know how sad I felt for the kids in elementary school who never drew their rainbows in ROYGBIV style ? Or whose artwork contained the most horrible combination of colours known to the human eye ? Children need guidance, and since we seem to be all about teaching them right from wrong, how to read, how to share, we should go ahead and teach them colour theory as well so they can see things in a different way. A way that doesn't suck.

to say design is futile is to say art as a whole is futile. and without art, there is no unstructured means for communicating creativity and creation. and we are built to absorb and enjoy and create beauty... to mimic the creator. if God created all, and is thus a creator, and further an artist, graphic design means something. the end.

i agree with the above two.

Lets think about life without art for a second: it would suck.

God can still use your talents, even in the avenue of social justice. think about non profit organizations needs. and needs to reach out to those not interested in issues that are important. i feel like the above two said it all. but this is my spin...
