why are we not there? why do we not think to go there? who wants to meet up with my friend tony on his year long trip around the world. im thinking the slovenia / turkey / poland leg. or even the thailand / laos / cambodia leg.

something wrong with my mind
i have this weird sense of empathy which could, at times, be a good thing and at other times be a bad thing. maybe its not even empathy. i dont know. i guess its that i sit here at orchard valley coffeeshop and there is a guy playing guitar to a nonresponsive audience, so i feel like i should be the one person paying attention to him since everyone else is comfortable enough to not give him their time and attention. on a weird side note, i hate the times when i am sitting outside on my break at work and someone sits at a table next to me, and they make a little eye contact with me, leave their keys and phone on the table and go inside. instantly i feel that i am fully responsible for their possessions since the eye contact was made. but what do i do. i wait until they get back so that their stuff is safe (which it probably would have been) while i spend too much time on my break, sacrificing more money that could be made.
(side note) now its annoying because there is a couple talking really loud in front of the guitar guy.

noir
in class tonight we discussed film noir for a bit. i wasnt really paying attention, but i did get a few pages of notes in. but what i came out with is a desire to watch Brick again. i feel like it changed me, but i cannot say why. not that im hiding my answer, but i really dont know the answer. which is why i demand we watch it again. so can we do that soon....this weekend?

to make something
i think i became enrolled in what seemed like a class that would be a fun challenge. then we were told to work on our group project (which ended up having no structure...our basic instructions were to "make something") and i thought i didnt understand because i was not at the first two class meetings. here i am on my 3rd day in the class. and we are told to work in small groups of 4 or 5. being the extrovert, i wait for people to "fit me in" to their group. i meet up with 4 others and we discuss our small group project....which instructions are "to make something". i cannot deal with the abstract of the class. i need some sort of structure. i need something that is not vague. even though our class project is coming along, and our small group may be going somewhere, i have some fear going into the class. maybe it would be different if it were for an hour, but 3 hours, twice a week. i cant do that.
now its time for your thoughts.
my smaller group project is based around our reactions to outsourcing or the globalization of corporations. and we are all going to present the theme as a story/narrative that will flow from each piece of our own. (we all have defined factors, one guys is speed/velocity, one girl has self-portraiture, another guy has comic, mine hasnt been defined, but it will consist of the simplicity of life vs the complexity of life.)
so my thoughts are to have a story shown through a series of postcards, from a man who loses his job in middle america (to outsourcing) and he keeps writing postcards to his wife about his lack of finding jobs. each card will be from different cities. she writes back in the meantime telling him that he should just come back and make things work there. and then finally he finds his job in thailand, and it ends up being the same job he had back at home, and he realizes that it was meant for him.
i know its a huge mess right now. but i only have a month to convey these thoughts, make postcards, find good writers and put it up in a gallery at school.

a "to do list" for shannon and jesse
i wanted to make sure you guys get to do some of the stuff i got to do in london. click on the pictures for the websites.
the wapping project. i would show you a picture of the inside, but id rather you be amazed by the website or the actual place. i will honestly say this was one of the best places i have ever been in my life, food-wise, art-wise, culture-wise, everything in one. its located off the Wapping stop on the East London line of the underground
tate modern. this could either take you a few hours or a few days depending on how well you enjoy it. its free unless you want to go to the special gallerey for that time, so it is well worth it to check out. i believe if you take the Jubilee line to Southwark there will be signs out there for the museum.
camden town. its pretty much a giant market every day of the week. much like haight street mixed with every thrift shop in the world. its fun walking through even if you arent buying anything. there is the best english breakfast i have ever had at this little cafe along Arlington Road (it would help to look at the map on the website), its near that 54, but its not that. i actually went to this restaurant both times ive been out to london. take the Northern line to Camden Town. everything is directly outside of the station and all around.
brick lane. great indian food all over the place. too many places to choose from. also great shops all around. sundays have great markets there. take the Hammersmith & City, Circle, Metropolitan, and Central lines to Liverpool Stattion, which is a station that you should probably see anyways.
the columbia road flower market. on sundays (i believe, check the website), there is a great flower market. even if you dont buy flowers you can taste cheeses and wines and look at artists make stuff. shannon you would love to take pictures here. jesse, you might. this is off the East London line at Shoreditch

whatever happened to predictability?
my life has become predictable.
start the day with the same routine. put on my work clothes. but not my socks and shoes. i will soon put those on once i am downstairs.
walk from my car to my work with my apron, my book and my lunch all in my left hand.
on my lunch break you can find me outside with my legs on a separate chair, reading, and eating the same turkey and provolone sandwich, daily. with a grande ice water without a lid.
i think i found my comfortable moment.
my life has become predictable.

highlights from two zero zero six
in no particular order:
daft punk at coachella. i know no concert will ever equal this. no visuals will ever equal this. it was just perfect. also finding $20 on the ground right before they played was a nice addition.
zurich. or the whole trip to europe. what can be wrong with spending 21 days with 6 friends in england, france, spain, switzerland, czech republic, netherlands, belgium and scotland.
new york city. i felt strange that i have travelled to asia and europe but i have never been to the biggest city in usa. it was fun spending time with the whole random crew of people who were out there.
the knife. everything about this show. then chasing karin afterwards and then she dissapeared.
the rest of coachella. devendra banhart and cat power both were amazing. as well as many other acts. i plan on going every year from here on out. its weird that i already bought my hotel room (thanks to morgan).
im enjoying doing graphics work when i am not in school. i also fully enjoyed this series.
other things are the bonfire/dance parties and all the new taquerias i have visited and campbell and especially:
the people.
new friends (santa cruz/capitola/scotts valley)
old friends whom i never did my best to keep up with and i fully regret that time away, but now im glad we are friends again (nicole)

the rain drops the rain drops the rain drops
last night i walked from my car to my home, pouring rain, and it felt like the perfect way to close out the day. rain has the power to cleanse, rain has to power to (re)new [sorry kristin, i had to use that]. instantly the rain felt to me like i was in scotland again, with a big backpack on, walking from the glasgow central station up high street to mcclay's guest house, soaking wet, with no one to share the experience with.
after talking with a few people last night it seems as though everyone doesnt like to do anything in the rain (drive/shop/anything involving being outside). but when people are alone they enjoy being in the rain because of its sense of power.
i walked home slowly (i wouldve stood there, but i had some self concious issues) and it brought me back to the same "its me and you god" kind of scenario that i had in glasgow. i understand that the rain makes our clothes wet, and it makes it harder to drive, and it makes more people drink coffee, and it heightens the number of people slipping, but i love rain when we havent had it in a while. thats all im getting at.

taking some sort of initiative
im happy because our community group started last night. all day i was nervous that there would be, at any moment, that awkward silence, with people looking at me for guidance. i became a leader because i wanted a group. leadership and i dont really go hand in hand. i was expecting an array of people, and it was nice seeing 8 or 9 friends praying and talking and longing to learn more. everyone had this sense of excitement at the end. im excited to see where this thing goes.
also, christmas at starbucks consists of bing crosby, rufus wainwright and the decemberists. i can tell some guy up at the hearmusic office really is pushing that crane wife album.
expect by next week my top 10 albums of 2006 and my top 10 concerts of 2006.
